I had never heard of this brand of tire before. It turns out it was or is quite popular and I really know almost nothing of off-roading culture. Here is what I found online:

"Founded in 1963 by off-road pioneer Dick Cepek, the company started in a California garage to solve a personal problem: existing tires were too narrow for desert exploration. Cepek collaborated with manufacturers to develop wider, more durable tires, effectively jumpstarting the modern off-road aftermarket industry. His deep involvement in the early days of the Baja 1000 and the founding of the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA) cemented the brand’s "Baja Proven" reputation among enthusiasts.

Over the decades, the brand introduced industry firsts like Kevlar-wrapped sidewalls and aggressive "Gumbo Mudder" treads. Following financial shifts in the late 1990s, the brand was acquired by Mickey Thompson in 2000 and eventually became part of the Goodyear family via the Cooper Tire acquisition in 2021. Today, Dick Cepek remains a specialized nameplate focusing on hybrid tires that balance rugged trail performance with daily street drivability."

This is a guy who tried to do serious off-roading and couldn't because nothing worked for him. He had a company custom make tires to his specs and then his friends wanted them as well. What started out as an operation in his garage became a national brand. So that's cool.
