I was eleven years old in December of 1979 when Star Trek the Motion Picture hit theatres. My mom was broke (as usual) so I wheedled my grandmother into taking me to see the movie. She didn't understand it. To be honest, neither did I. I mean the refitted Enterprise looked pretty sweet, but the story was... Whut?
I didn't understand the point of the weird bald chick who got disappeared and and reappeared with the glowing gem on her throat. I also found Captain Decker annoying. I went into the theatre expecting more of the TV show I loved and it ddn't feel much like that at all. Blah.
The ship redesign was pretty cool, I liked that part. Honestly, it had better lines than the one in the original series**. Saying this offends purists, but there you go. So I don't mind at all that the Faux Enterprise featured in the town of Vulcan, AB, is the Enterprise refit rather than the original from the TV series. It makes me happy.
**Giving a nod to ST:SNW for getting their update of the original TV series Enterprise right, even making the deflector dish look classy. Well done, there.
